Vani Vilas Sagar

'Mari Kanive' as it is polpularly called in Kannada, Vani Vilas Sagar is a dam near Hiriyur in Chitradurga District of Karnataka. It is one of the oldest dams built in the state of Karnataka by the then Mysore Maharajas. Built across the river Vedavati, the dam provides water to a large part of the dry district.

View of the dam...

Lying at a distance of 40 kms from Chitradurga, a trip to this dam can easily be clubbed with few other historical places in Chitradurga- the Fort and Chandravalli thota. Read more about Chitradurga Fort.

The construction of the dam was initiated by the widow queen of Maharaaja Chamaraja Wodeyar; later development works were undertaken by Diwan Sheshadri Iyer in the year 1897. It is believed that the royals of Mysore had to pledge their jewelry to complete the construction of the dam whose height is higher than that of KRS dam in Mysore.

A 'mantapa' kind of structure found on both sides of the dam...

The water here bears a multi- coloured look as it gives out a hue of green at one end and looks aqua blue on the other. It is also said that the water body on the whole is in the shape of Indian map, a fact which I overlooked during my visit and learnt about only later.

The place is rather dry and hot  especially so in summer, it's advisable to reach the spot early during the day. The surrounding areas do not offer great restaurants/ eateries except vendors selling tender coconut and some cool watermelons. But don't miss to stop at the Mysore Cafe near Chitradurga that offers some great South Indian as well as North Indian dishes.
